Beginning with the Caribbean...

I use Caribbean as a tourist destination and as an example to begin with. Caribbean is a destination that suffering solid waste and marine litter pollution. Tourists generate solid wastes such as food and kitchen wastes, paper, glass, metal and plastic containers and packaging, construction wastes (bricks, tiles, concrete, rebar, lumber, sheeting, etc.), clothing, and hazardous wastes (medications, batteries, paints, chemicals, etc) on the beach or on the sea side. I think Caribbean always be an excellent tourism destination; however, the solid wastes and marine litter pollution become big issues in the destination. As more tourists drop in the place more garbage littering the place.

It also should be awarded that the marine litter pollution has wider range influence especially for tourists’ health and safety. Discarded fishing line, rope and plastic trash or food bags can disable boats and ships by wrapping around boat propellers or being sucked into outboard boat engines. Medical wastes and drug paraphernalia dumped or transported onto beaches by winds and waves can threaten public health through disease transmission and broken glass and other sharp objects can harm humans especially young children.

Therefore, I think the stakeholders are taking main responsibility here.Local government need to focus on solving the problem and not just focus on the benefits. They can promulgate some new laws or rules to constrain tourists’ behaviors at least make tourists don’t littering garbage everywhere.
